EXTENSIVE MINOR-SUBJECT MODULE (25–40 ECTS)
The multidisciplinary Subject and Advanced Studies of FUNTS (25–40 ECTS) included in a Master’s Degree function as thesis-supporting modules for students who specialise in tourism within their own major subject. If students have not included FUNTS Basic Studies in their Bachelor’s Degree, they can take the basic courses as part of their Master’s Degree studies. Students can, according to their personal study plan approved by their university, include also other related smaller study modules in their degree. In the Subject and Advanced Studies of the Master’s Degree, students learn about research on tourism business, cultural and historical aspects, regional planning, research on social influences and their regulation, and ethical views. The studies enable students to use their expertise in tourism also in traditional occupations related to their major subjects.
The “innovation training” included in the courses deepens the insight into practices of the tourism business and the social and cultural influences and potential of tourism. The courses included in a Master’s Degree give a solid basis for tourism-related postgraduate studies and for research leading to adoctoral dissertation. Each year in January, 40 students are accepted for Subject and Advanced Studies. The studies are carried out as multiform education. Most courses include contact teaching in intensive courses lasting 2–3 days, taking place mainly in Savonlinna or in other member universities or tourism enterprises and tourist destinations. Students need to attend the intensive courses in order to complete the studies.
